What is Azure Virtual Networking?

The Azure Virtual Network (VNet) is the foundation of your Azure private network. Many Azure resources, such as Azure Virtual Machines (VM), can use VNet to securely communicate with one another, the Internet, and on-premises networks. VNets are similar to traditional networks in your own data centre, but they include additional Azure infrastructure benefits like scale, availability, and isolation.

Why use an Azure Virtual network?

Azure virtual networks enable Azure resources to securely communicate with one another via the Internet and on-premises networks. The following tasks can be using in virtual network:

  • Communication of Azure resources with the Internet
  • Communication between Azure resources
  • Communication with on-premises resources
  • Filtering network traffic
  • Routing network traffic
  • Integration with Azure services

Communication of Azure resources with the Internet

By default, all resources in a VNet can communicate outbound to the Internet. By assigning a public IP address or a public Load Balancer, you can share inbound to a resource. To manage outbound connections, a public IP address or a public load balancer can be used.

Communication between Azure resources

Azure resources securely communicate with one another in one of the following ways:

Through a virtual network:

VMs and other Azure resources, such as Azure App Service Environments, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), and Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets, can be deployed to a virtual network. 

Through a virtual network service endpoint:

Extend your virtual network’s private address space and identity to Azure service resources like Azure Storage accounts and Azure SQL Database via a direct connection. 

Through VNet Peering:

Using VNet peering, you can connect virtual networks to each other, allowing resources in either virtual network to communicate with each other. You can connect virtual networks in the same or different Azure regions.

Communicate with on-premises resources

To connect your on-premises computers and networks to a virtual network, you can use any of the following methods:

Point-to-site virtual private network (VPN):

A connection is made between a virtual network and a single computer in your network. Each computer that wishes to connect to a virtual network must configure its connection.

Azure ExpressRoute:

Through an ExpressRoute partner, a connection is established between your network and Azure. This is a private connection. The Internet does not carry traffic.

Filter network traffic

You can use either or both of the following options to filter network traffic between subnets:

Network security groups:

Multiple inbound and outbound security rules in network security groups and application security groups allow you to filter traffic to and from resources by source and destination IP address, port, and protocol.

Route network traffic

By default, Azure routes traffic between subnets, connected virtual networks, on-premises networks, and the Internet.

Virtual network integration for Azure services

Integrating Azure services into an Azure virtual network allows virtual machines or compute resources in the virtual network to have private access to the service.
